Silversea Cruises

Built at Cantieri Navali Visentini in Viareggio, Italy as yardnumber 776, Silver Wind floated out in 1993. Her tonnage is 16.927, her lenght is 155,81 meters, she is 21,42 meters wide and her draft is 5,30 meters. She sails at 17 knots for 314 passengers served by 185 crewmembers. There are eight passenger decks and she flies the flag of the Bahamas with her homeport Nassau.

Silver Wind was the second of two megayaught like sisterships for the new company Silversea Cruises. This company was formed in 1993 by V-ships, the former owner of Sitmar Cruises which was sold to P&O in 1988. Silver Cloud and Silver Wind were the first two passengerships managed by V-ships since this sale. At this time, V-ships manages Radisson Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises, as well as some other cruiseships in recent history like Phoenix Reisen's first Albatros and Swan Hellenic's first Minerva.

Silver Wind is one of the most luxurious ships sailing today, awarded with 5 stars by Berlitz. She looks like a small version of the new ships of Regent Seven Seas Cruises like Seven Seas Navigator or Seven Seas Voyager and the unusual position of the lifeboats provides seaviews for every cabin without obstructions. Of all cabins, 75 percent have private balconies and the bathrooms have marble floors. These ships provide pure luxury for those who can affort it. Although the Silversea ships sail worldwide, they are especially popular with European passengers.
In 2001, the two-ship fleet of the company was doubled by the introduction of the 28.000-ton sisterships Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow. They are significantly bigger then the first pair, but only take on 74 passengers more. These few more passengers are looked after by 110 crewmembers extra. The passenger to crew ratio on these new ships is one of the highest in the cruising industry, with every 4 guests served by 3 crew. No wonder these ships were rated among the highest scoring passengervessels by Berlitz, recieving the 5-star plus rating.

Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow look a lot like their two forerunners, resembling the same profile, only bigger. Silver Whisper was named by Marzia Lefebre D'Ovidio, wife of Silversea Cruises' CEO. The ship made her first cruise in june 2001 and two years later she was used as an accomodationship for the celebrations of the 300-year anniversary of St.-Petersburgh. This charter was signed by Vladimir Putin himself. Also, in 2004 she was used as a hotelship in Athens for the Olympic Games, as were her older sisters.

Silver Whisper was built on the same wharf as the first ships for the company in Viareggio, Italy as yardnumber 982. She flies the Bahamian flag and her homeport is Nassau. Her tonnage is 28.258 tons and she is 182 meters long, 24,80 meters wide and her draft is 6 meters. Her eleven decks can accomodate 388 passengers served by 295 crew. Her rating is 5-star plus.
